Milam Settlers Day is celebrating its 32nd year (1992-2024) as one of the most popular events in Sabine County. Milam Settlers Day, which takes place each year on the weekend before Thanksgiving, is located in Milam at the junction of Hwys 87 and 21. The organization estimates a crowd to exceed 3,000 over the course of the two days. Milam Settlers Day is devoted to the preservation of Milam’s history and to the promotion of Milam’s spirit of community. The reconstruction of the Causey House was one early project of the organization. The acquisition of a marker to designate the place where Stephen F. Austin spent his first night in Texas has been placed on Las Borregas Creek. In addition, the organization furnishes money toward the upkeep of the historic Milam cemetery located at the end of Vernon St. in Milam and has helped present a historical marker for the cemetery. Money raised for Milam Settlers Day is also used for the upkeep of El Camino Park, including its buildings, which is the site of Milam Settlers Day. The organization awards college scholarships to local high school graduates and hopes to expand that program as funds allow. Other civic donations include those to local Volunteer Fire Departments. The organization has also donated to the El Camino Real de los Tejas Caddo Region organization, which is promoting tourism all along the present day Highway 21 in Texas and Highway 6 in Louisiana. The group promotes the “Sale On the Trail” in May to bring visitors to the area along that corridor. It is the goal of Milam Settlers Day Org. to support any historical documentation and preservation or restoration of Milam as a community and develop a spirit of heritage and pride in the area.

WHEN IS A LOG MORE THAN A TREE TRUNK ? WHEN ITS A HOUSE !
The Causey House is a restored home built around 1830. This historical abode is only second in age to the Gaines-Oliphant house which is the oldest residence in the state of Texas and also located in Sabine County. Donated by Vic and Celeste Waller, and rescues and restored by local Milam volunteer craftsmen, the Causey House has been reassembled in El Camino Park. This also happens to be the same site where the original Sabine County Courthouse once stood.
The site is now home to the annual Milam Settlers Day Weekend Celebration, held on the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving. The festivities celebrate Milam's first settlers who, in all likelyhood, built and lived in homes just like the Causey House. A closer look at the house reveals hand-hewn quality craftsmanship characteristic of the period. Volunteers has supplied the interior with both authentic and replica furnishings likely to have been in the original structure.
Milam is one of the oldest towns in Texas, first described by Stephen F. Austin in his diary as he camped along the El Camino Real.
The organization awards college scholarships to local high school graduates and hopes to expand that program as funds allow.
In honor of our faithful servant, Felix Holmes, who spent many years contributing to these efforts, we are renaming our annual scholarship: The Felix Holmes Memorial Service Award. Felix was a servant to so many, and we hope this Award will be a forever reminder of his love and sacrifice. Preference will be given to the student who displays the love of history, community, and service, modeled by Felix. Applications will be available through their local counselor programs, and awarded in May each year.
We were very proud to present the 2024 award to: Havana Kincel of Hemphill ISD.
